Ashwin impresses as India triumphs over Bangladesh by 280 runs! Lead the series 1-0!

Ashwin Bangladesh by 280 runs

Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin claimed 6 wickets in Bangladesh’s 2nd innings which helped Team India secure a thumping victory of 280 runs at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Bangladesh started Day 4 with 158-4 and required 357 runs with an additional day remaining. On the other side, Rohit Sharma’s led side needed just 6 wickets to wrap up the innings on the same day. As a result, the competition of 357 runs vs 6 wickets became much more intriguing.

However, Ashwin’s 6-wicket haul, conceding just 88 runs in 21 overs at an economy of 4.20, made it impossible for Bangladeshi batters to chase a mammoth target of 515 runs.

Rohit Sharma and his men continue their 12-year winning streak in test matches on homeground.

Ravichandran Ashwin was named the Player of the match for his brilliant performance in terms of batting and bowling. He scored his 6th test hundred and grabbed 6 wickets in the same test that steered India to a 1-0 lead in the 2-match test series.

Interestingly, the 38-year-old all-rounder has claimed an overall 522 wickets and bagged his back-to-back Player of the Match award in his hometown in 2021 and 2024 in test cricket.

Let’s find out the interesting moments of India and Bangladesh’s innings that highlight the facts of how Ashwin created a sensation by achieving numerous records in the first test match.

Important Moments of India vs Bangladesh 1st Test Match

Despite a collapsing start, India concluded Day 1 on a dominating note, and here are the main highlights you need to know:

India’s 1st Innings: Ashwin, Jaiswal and Jadeja’s show

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 118-ball-56-run knock (including 9 fours) helped India cross the 100-run mark after losing the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant.

After Jaiswal’s dismissal, Bangladeshi bowlers seemed to gain domination over Indian batters, but it was short-lived. Ravichandran Ashwin’s century of 113 runs from 133 balls (including 11 fours and 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 84.96 along with Ravindra Jadeja’s 86 runs from 124 balls (including 10 fours and 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 69.35 proved to be the game-changing moments.

The 199-run partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja guided India to reach above 300 runs.

Even after Hasan Mahmud’s 5-wicket haul supported by Taskin Ahmed’s 3-fer, India concluded its innings with 376-10 in 91.2 overs.

Bangladesh’s 1st Innings: Indian Bowler’s Domination

Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the only highest scorer of his side scoring 32 runs from 64 balls, while the rest of the batters weren’t able to tackle the powerful bowling attack of these bowlers:

  • Jasprit Bumrah: 4-50 in 11 overs.
  • Mohammed Siraj: 2-30 in 10.1 overs.
  • Akash Deep: 2-19 in 5 overs.
  • Ravindra Jadeja: 2-19 in 8 overs.

Bangladesh’s innings was bundled up to just 149 runs in 47.1 overs. However, Ashwin wasn’t able to shine on Day 2 as he was the only wicketless bowler.

India’s 2nd Innings: Pant and Gill’s exceptional centuries

Once again India’s top batters faltered with the instant dismissals of Rohit Sharma (10 runs), Yashasvi Jaiswal (5 runs), and Virat Kohli (17 runs). But, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant made a remarkable comeback by scoring centuries each and stitched a crucial 167-run partnership.

Pant’s 109 runs from 128 balls (including 13 fours and 4 sixes) and Gill’s unbeaten 119 runs from 176 balls (including 10 fours and 4 sixes), ensured India was leading with 515 runs. Consequently, the skipper Rohit Sharma declared India’s 2nd innings at 287-4 in 64 overs.

Bangladesh’s 2nd Innings: Ashwin’s 6-fer too tough for opponent batters

Bangladesh’s captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s lone battle of 82 runs from 127 balls (including 8 fours and 3 sixes) went in vain as he wasn’t able to single-handedly save his team ending up with a total of 234-10 in 62.1 overs. Most importantly, Ravichandran Ashwin’s 6-fer made it tough for other Bangladeshi batters to offer support to Najmul’s knock.
