Asia Cup 2018, Super 4 Preview: India vs Bangladesh – The second round of Asia Cup 2018 will commence on Friday, September 21 when India will take on Bangladesh in the first fixture of Super Four at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Both teams have played 32 ODIs against each other with the Indians comprehensively leading the scoreline 27-5.

In their most recent ODI clash, India outplayed Bangladesh by nine wickets. It was the semi-final game of the ICC Champions Trophy played at Birmingham in 2017. Bangladesh were put into bat first and went on to score 264/7 in 50 overs before India cantered to their target inside 41 overs

India

After a not so convincing performance against Hong Kong in their first game of the tournament, India silenced their critics with a flawless victory over Pakistan on Wednesday. They outclassed their opponent in all departments of the game and will now go into this match riding high on confidence. They also have the benefit of having played their previous two matches at Dubai International Stadium. This means that India won’t be needing much time to adjust to the conditions and will have a much better idea about the nature of the pitch.

Batting : Shikhar Dhawan has been in good form in Asian conditions. The left-handed batsman cracked a ton against Hong Kong and then followed that up with a decent 46 against Pakistan, while his opening partner and skipper Rohit Sharma too made a valuable contribution of 52 and both these batsmen will once again hold the key to India’s batting.

Among others, Ambati Rayudu has hit 91 runs in two matches while Dinesh Karthik has also looked promising in his respective knocks of 33 and 31. Both these batsmen along with MS Dhoni form a formidable middle order and are capable to making the opposition bowlers surrender.

Bowling : Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kedar Jadhav were the star performers with the ball against Pakistan. Both snared three wickets apiece and the team will want these two to continue to crack some wickets upfront.

Jasprit Bumrah too finished with impressive figures of 2-23 against the arch-rivals and he could hurt the Tigers with the new ball. In the absence of Hardik Pandya, the team will also bank on the the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal to fill up his duties and demolish the opposition with their variations.

Expected Playing XI : Rohit Sharma (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Jasprit Bumrah, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav.

Bangladesh

Without Tamim, the Tigers failed to transfer their momentum from their previous game and suffered a humiliating defeat against Afghanistan in their second game. They were outplayed in all three facets of the game and were not able to push the Afghans at all. They will have a lot of things to look after and sort out in a span of a few hours to get ready for the ultimate clash.

Batting : With no Tamim at the top, Bangladesh will have to rely on the middle-order to do the bulk of the scoring. Their veterans Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah will have to step up to this occasion and they will rely heavily on Mohammad Mithun and Mahmudullah.

Mushfiqur Rahim (144) and Mithun (63) played a key role in the tournament opener against Sri Lanka and the team will need these two to replicate that performance.

Bowling : Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman are the main threats in Bangladesh’s pace attack. These two have been among the most successful bowlers in ODIs for their nation and it will be up to them to provide the early breakthroughs and set platforms for others to follow.

Shakib Al Hasan and debutant Abu Hider were the only positives for the Tigers against the Afghans. Shakib was the pick of the lot with 4/42 while Hider also impressed everyone with his variations and ended up with figures of 2/50 in his maiden outing and the skipper will need these two to replicate it against India.

Expected Playing XI : Mashrafe Mortaza (C), Abu Hider Rony, Mustafizur Rahman, Liton Das, Nazmul Hossain Shanto or Mominul Haque, Mohammad Mithun, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain and Mehidy Hasan.

Dubai, Sep 19: A strong bowling performance followed by some power packed batting saw India thrash arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in their Group A clash of the Asia Cup cricket tournament here on Wednesday.

Asked to field first, three-wicket hauls from pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and part-time off-spinner Kedar Jadhav enabled India to restrict Pakistan to a paltry 162. Bhuvneshwar returned figures of 3/15 while Jadhav got 3/23.

In reply, a quickfire half-century by Rohit Sharma and his 86-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan saw India overhaul the target with a whopping 21 overs to spare.

Rohit plundered 52 runs off 39 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and three sixes along the way.

Asia Cup 2018:India vs Pakistan, Defending Asian champions will lock horns with arch-rivals in their Asia Cup clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The India-Pakistan rivalry is old, and the sub-plots are always fascinating. The two teams are coming up against each other in the UAE – the neutral venue where they have played the most against each other – after a period of 12 long years.Since the start of the decade, India have had a 7-4 win-loss equation against Pakistan in ODIs. Since the bilateral series of 2012, the two teams have only met at multi-team events where the overbearing pre-match narrative has been about whether Pakistan can break that hoodoo. One of those two wins came in the Asia Cup, but the inability to beat India in ICC events was still held against them. Until Champions Trophy 2017, of course. Now the scales have been tipped, the pressure has shifted, further adding to a fantastic rivalry that has sporadic renewals.

Hong Kong have also given Pakistan a few reasons to cherish. The Indian middle-order is still unconvincing, Bhuvneshwar Kumar went wicketless and for the majority of the Hong Kong chase, it appeared like they’d pull off an upset against India. They eventually didn’t, but a thoroughly tested India might just be there for the taking.

The result of this game of course, will have no bearing on what happens ahead, to the extent that India will remain A1 in the seedings and play their Super Four fixtures in Dubai. But there’s more to this match than the result. This will be just the first meeting – one sure to whet the appetite of the rivalry-famished fans – before the possibility of two more rendezvous, if they both end up in the final.

So, can the cricketing rarity that is an India-Pakistan One-Day International be inconsequential? Only technically, yes.

When: September 19, 2018, 3:30 PM Local time, 5:00 PM IST

Where: Dubai International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: It’s the sort of fixture that even sapping Dubai heat won’t have a bearing on. A packed house, braving the weather, is expected to grace the stadium. All the pitches used in the tournament so far have been slow, and Wednesday’s is going to be no exception.

Asia Cup 2018: India vs Pakistan Team News:

India

India have a big overnight decision to make. Jasprit Bumrah has to return for the Pakistan clash, but it would be cruel on Khaleel Ahmed, if it is at his expense. Shardul Thakur had an ordinary evening, and should make way.

The next big call is in the top-order. The bench has Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul waiting to get in, but with Ambati Rayudu performing well and Kedar Jadhav doubling up as the sixth bowling option, only one player can be relegated to the bench – Dinesh Karthik. KL Rahul coming in would mean he either bats at 4 or takes No.3 and Rayudu moves a spot down.

If Pandya is indeed a player they cannot do without – which is likely to be the case – then Khaleel will have to be benched.

Probable XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, KL Rahul/Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya/Khaleel Ahmed

Pakistan

Mohammad Amir has three wickets in eight ODIs in 2018 but Sarfraz Ahmed came to his strike pacer’s defence in a press conference, even going to the extent of citing the example of Mohammed Shami, who he felt bowled well in the Tests in England but didn’t have too many wickets to show for the effort.

There’s logic in giving the left-armer a rest, considering they have enough similar fast bowlers to trouble the Indian batsmen and the fact that they’ve already made it to the Super Four stage.

Probable XI: Fakhar Zaman, Imam Ul Haq, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed, Asif Ali, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Usman Khan, Mohammad Amir/Junaid Khan, Hasan Ali

Did you know:

– Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has three hundreds and a half-century in his last five ODI outings

– If Yuzvendra Chahal picks two wickets against Pakistan, he’ll become India’s third fastest to 50 ODI wickets (in 27 matches) – behind Ajit Agarkar (23 matches) and Kuldeep Yadav (24 matches).

What they said:

“People say this is Pakistan’s home ground and you can say that, but I believe the conditions here are even for every team. The weather here is like it is in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Pitches are also similarly slow. So it isn’t really home ground for anyone. It is an even ground for all.” – Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed on whether his team enjoy home advantage.

Asia Cup 2018: India rallied to avoid a shock defeat by Hong Kong in the Asia Cup, eventually winning by 26 runs in Dubai.

Hong Kong, who lost their one-day international status this year, were 174-0 off 34 overs, chasing 286 to win.

But captain Anshy Rath (73) and Nizakat Khan (92) fell in quick succession as India took four wickets for 25 runs.

Kinchit Shah and Aizaz Khan kept their side in contention but after both were removed in the 45th over, Hong Kong could only reach 259-8.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan had earlier hit 127 off 120 balls, with Ambati Rayudu making 60 from 70 balls.

Yet Hong Kong conceded only 48 runs from the last 10 overs, also taking five wickets to limit the world number two ODI side – who have rested several players for this tournament, including captain Virat Kohli – to 285-7.

A weakened India bowling attack struggled for long periods before debutant left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took three wickets each to stifle Hong Kong’s chase.

Defeat means qualifiers Hong Kong are eliminated from the competition, while India face Pakistan at the same venue on Wednesday to determine the winner of Group A – although the arch rivals are now guaranteed to meet again in the Super Four stage.

Asia Cup Group A, Dubai
India 285-7 (50 overs): Dhawan 127, Rayudu 60, Shah 3-39
Hong Kong 259-8 (50 overs): Nizakat 92, Rath 73, Khaleel 3-48, Chahal 3-46
India won by 26 runs

Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup due to a finger injury he sustained during one of the SLC T20 League matches last week.

While the Sri Lankan batting mainstay was provisionally included in the 16-member squad, a medical assessment now states that his broken middle finger will need more time to heal. Wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella, who was already in the standby list, has now been named as his replacement.

Chandimal, who was ignored for the South Africa series at home, owing to his six-match ban for ball tampering charges and bringing the game into disrepute, last took part in the solitary T20I against Proteas. His full-fledged return though was slated to be during the team’s Asia Cup campaign in the UAE.

Sri Lanka will also miss the services of their offspinner Akila Dananjaya for some part of the tournament as he’s expecting the birth of his first child. The tournament begins on September 15, with Sri Lanka on Bangladesh in Dubai.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday announced that it has granted ODI status to all matches in the upcoming Asia Cup 2018.

The tournament will see Hong Kong as the only participating team without an ODI status. Hong Kong defeated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the final of the qualifiers to book their place in the prestigious tournament. They will face Pakistan and India on September 16 and 18 in their first-round matches.

“To grant ODI status to all matches in the Asia Cup is a positive step taken by the ICC Board as we continue to take an in-depth look at international cricket structures in relation to our long-term ambition of growing the game and adding to the one billion fans who already follow the sport,” ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said in a media release.

“This decision was informed by our review of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier earlier this year where there was a mix of games with and without international status which proved to be confusing for fans.”

“The fact that these events are open to teams beyond the existing 16 teams that currently have ODI status is important and, accordingly, ensuring all matches are granted ODI status is befitting of the events and just reward for the teams that have qualified.”

“Of course all T20 matches between ICC Members now have T20I status and we are in the midst of reviewing the whole issue of ODI status, which should be completed in the next few months,” he concluded.

The Asia Cup will take place in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 15 and it will run till September 18. The tournament will see participation from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
