IND VS PAK – Big Clash CT 25 On February 23 In Dubai You Need To Know!

Champions Trophy

The much-awaited ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 is set to return after eight years. After the ICC (International Cricket Council) made a tough decision to host the tournament on a hybrid model, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has approved the UAE (United Arab Emirates) as a neutral venue to host India’s matches.

However, the ICC still has to announce the schedule for the eight-team tournament officially. Meanwhile, several reports have suggested that the India vs Pakistan clash is set to take place on 23rd February 2025.

Previously, Pakistan was supposed to solely host the Champions Trophy (CT) 2025. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) hasn’t received permission from the Indian government due to security issues that restricted Team India’s travel to Pakistan.

The dispute over hosting the tournament in a hybrid model between February 19 and March 9 was finally resolved on December 19th, 2024 (Thursday). This is because the ICC, PCB, and BCCI reached an agreement that the India-Pakistan matches at the international level would be played at a neutral venue.

As India refuses to travel to the neighboring country, the tournament’s hosting nation Pakistan has selected Dubai as the neutral venue.

Similarly, Pakistan’s matches in any ICC event hosted by India will be played at a neutral venue as a part of the agreement till 2027. Under Jay Shah’s era as the ICC Chairman, this decision became effective for key events in the 2024-27 cycle that will be hosted by India or Pakistan with neutral venues wherever required.

Why Dubai is Selected as a Neutral Venue To Host India’s Matches in Champions Trophy 2025?

After a meeting between the PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, and the head of the Emirates Cricket Board Sheikh Nahyan Al Mubarak on Saturday (December 21), it was revealed that Dubai was proposed as the neutral venue for Champions Trophy 2025.

There are stadiums in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. But, Dubai International Stadium in the UAE was given the main preference due to its larger size.

Due to the continuing strained political relationship between India and Pakistan, Sheikh Nahyan, who is also the senior UAE minister, worked out the logistical and administrative requirements with Naqvi for the grand event that Pakistan hosts.

Earlier, the reports claimed that Colombo was the prime contender after hosting the Asia Cup 2023 along with Pakistan. But, after the BCCI, PCB, and ICC accepted the deal it was understood that Sri Lanka as a neutral venue wouldn’t get the hosting rights of the tournament. Along with the ICC, the broadcasters have supported the decision by making Dubai a suitable location for the tournament.

As per the reports, the UAE is set to host five matches in the tournament. It includes India’s three matches in the group stages. Furthermore, India placed in Group A along with these three teams:

  • New Zealand
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan

Rohit Sharma’s led side is likely to start its campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh in Dubai. Subsequently, the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash is likely to take place on February 23.

Team India will play the last match in their group phase against New Zealand on March 2. Suppose the men-in-blue qualify for the knockouts, one semi-final, and a final match would be shifted to Dubai.

Conclusion:

As BCCI has been clear with its stance from the beginning, the debate has been prolonged due to PCB’s refusal to accept the hybrid model. Moreover, the chairman Mohsin Naqvi was not ready to face the public by losing the sole hosting rights.

Previously, the PCB has allowed Pakistani players to travel to India for the ODI World Cup 2023. They initially denied the neutral venue concept for CT 25. Later, the Naqvi’s led PCB accepted it on a conditional basis confirming that Pakistan wouldn’t play its matches in India of all the ICC events in the 2024-27 cycle.

To upgrade the stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, the PCB has spent several million dollars. As Pakistan is set to host at least 10 matches of this tournament at these three venues, it is expected that the renovation work will be completed by the middle of January.

Most importantly, you need to know that PCB’s statement is not the final confirmation. Rather, it is an agreement that India’s matches would take place in the UAE with Dubai considered as the favorable venue.

Also, the UAE is considered the central location of India-Pakistan clashes. In addition, the battle between these two rivals limited only to the ICC and ACC events, becomes extremely important.

However, final confirmation from the ICC will provide complete clarity about the tournament’s schedule and venue.
