The Indian Premier League has been exciting by introducing new concepts every year to make the contest more interesting. Especially, the new IPL 2024 rules make the contest much more balanced between a bowler and a batsman.
Fans will enjoy the curtain raiser of the IPL 2024 tournament at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where the defending Champions Chennai Super Kings will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 22nd March 2024 (Friday).
The previous edition of the IPL was unique by introducing the impact player rule. It gave a lot of depth and certainty to the playing XI that significantly influenced the overall outcome of the match.
Mainly, the BCCI tested the new IPL 2024 rules in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-24 and the outcome proved to be successful. It is expected that the new rule will make the competition more fierce by limiting the number of bouncers per over. As a result, the rule impacts the teams to include top-quality pacers in the playing XI. Do you know that there is a change in salary for uncapped players that makes the payout much more lucrative?
Apart from the bowling conditions, you need to know the IPL 2024 rules for DRS, rescheduling games for a particular team, Super Over in Playoffs, strike rotation after dismissal and different types of penalties.
Interestingly, the impact player rule has been retained for the upcoming season with certain terms and conditions. Also, the selection criteria for the playing XI is based on a unique concept which you need to know in detail…
IPL 2024 Rules You Should Know
Here are the important IPL 2024 rules you need to know before the 17th season commences:
1. Two Bouncers Per Over:
Pace bowlers can bowl a maximum number of two bouncers per over. Indian cricketer Jaydev Unadkat believes that bowlers can experience game-changing moments with various strategic opportunities. He feels that it is an added advantage for a bowler over any batsman.
Moreover, the new IPL 2024 rules allow fast bowlers to bowl yorkers, slower balls and two bouncers per over. Consequently, it creates pressure on the batting side and keeps the batsman confused in crucial situations.
2. Impact Player Rule:
The rule states that the team captains must list out the four substitutes during the toss, out of which any one of them should be included as an impact player.
If a team consists of four overseas players in the playing XI, then an impact player should be an Indian. On the other side, if there are three or fewer overseas players, then a non-Indian player from the substitutes can be an impact player.
According to the IPL 2024 rules, a team skipper can introduce an impact player under the following conditions:
- Before the innings commence
- Conclusion of an over
- Fall of any wicket
- The batsman retiring anytime during the over
However, a substitute fielder can take the place of an injured impact player. But, it is based upon the umpire’s satisfaction. Also, an impact player can take the place of a retired batsman only if required.
Importantly, a captain cannot act as an impact player or vice versa. Rather, a captain can use a substitute fielder who cannot bowl or lead their team.
Furthermore, both teams can use only one impact player per inning. But, it isn’t compulsory and depends upon the team’s choices.
3. Decision Review System (DRS):
Each team can opt for two per inning. Additionally, players can opt to take reviews for decisions like wides and no-balls, based on the new IPL 2024 rules.
4. Playing XI Selection Criteria:
Interestingly, team captains can walk in with two different sheets before declaring their final playing XI after the toss. Unlike the previous season where the captains had to exchange the teams before the toss.
Ultimately, the latest IPL 2024 rules are based on the concept of Winning the toss and Winning the match by selecting the best playing XI in specific conditions.
5. Rescheduling Games:
The BCCI specifically attempts to reschedule the games if the teams can’t assemble their playing XI due to COVID-19. Based on the IPL 2024 rules, the technical teams will look into the issue if rescheduling isn’t possible.
6. Penalties:
These are the penalties that a team needs to undergo if they do not abide by the IPL 2024 rules:
- Overrate penalty: It includes a penalty of placing four fielders outside the 30–yard circle for not completing the overs in specified time.
- Dead Ball and 5-run Penalty: It is caused by the unethical actions of a wicketkeeper and fielder.
7. Strike Rotation after Dismissal:
Regardless of a batsman crossing the crease when a fielder takes a catch, the new batsman will take a strike, except for the final ball of the over.
8. Super Over in Playoffs:
Notably, the teams finishing at the higher position in the points table of IPL 2024 will qualify for the subsequent rounds of playoffs if the super-over isn’t completed due to several unavoidable reasons.
9. Change in Uncapped Players Salary:
According to the most recent IPL 2024 rules, the uncapped Indian cricket players participating in the upcoming season will receive a hike in their salary. In other words, the League fee applies to any uncapped player based on these conditions of the number of caps and package:
- 1 Cap with INR 50 Lakhs
- 5 to 9 Caps with INR 75 Lakhs
- 10 Caps and more for INR 75 lakhs
