The Rise of Afghanistan Cricket: An Inspirational Journey | T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-Finals

Rashid Khan’s led Afghanistan cricket team created history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals, which was indeed their first entry in any knockout stages of the ICC tournament. However, the Afghan cricketers weren’t successful in extending their journey to the finals of the tournament after facing a severe 9-wicket defeat against South Africa. As a result, this was not only a huge win for South Africa in terms of balls remaining in T20IS but also broke their semi-finals losing jinx, thereby qualifying into their maiden ICC final.

Despite losing the match, Afghanistan has made their people proud by sealing their first-ever spot in an ICC tournament semi-final. Especially, Afghanistan’s roaring victory against the top-tier nations such as New Zealand in the group stages and Australia in the Super 8s, makes them ranked as one of the most competitive teams in the world.  But, Afghanistan’s 8-run thrilling victory against Bangladesh, sealed their spot in the semis and paved the way for Australia’s elimination from the tournament, which was one of the historic moments in cricket so far.

Do you know that the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) played a crucial role in nurturing Afghanistan cricket over the years? It was in 2010 when Afghanistan played its first T20 World Cup as an Associate nation and gained Test status in 2017.

Let’s explore how Afghanistan entered the cricket world with a humble start and gradually improved in every ICC tournament by receiving valuable support from BCCI to experience their first-ever semi-final match in the T20 World Cup 2024.

BCCI’s Support to Afghanistan Cricket Team

Here’s how BCCI provided support after the formation of Afghanistan cricket board in 1995 that later became ICC’s Affiliate member in 2001, Asian Cricket Council member in 2003 and a full membership status in 2017:

1. Financial Support:

The Indian government approved $1 million funds to construct a new stadium in Afghanistan, in the southern region of Kandahar. Since the development contract was granted under India’s small project development scheme for stadium that came in Aino Mina, it became one of the main reasons for providing a huge financial support on a land donated to Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in 2012.

2. Infrastructure and Support:

The BCCI, ACB and Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority signed an MOU (Memorandum of understanding) by offering the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex as a temporary homeground for Afghanistan cricketers. This resulted in allowing players to practice for their home international cricket matches.

3. Former Indian Players as Afghanistan Coaches:

The former Indian players such as Lalchand Rajput and Manoj Prabhakar have earlier coached the Afghanistan Cricket Team. Whereas, Ajay Jadeja was the mentor for Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where the Hashmatullah Shahidi’s led side secured 4 out of 9 victories. It includes a dominating win against England by 69 runs and had a closer chance of qualifying into the knockout stages of that tournament.

Afghanistan Performance in T20 World Cup 2024

Starting with a thumping victory against Uganda in Group C fixtures, Afghanistan qualified into the next stages by ranking 2nd position with 6 points and +1.835 net run rate. Similarly, in the Super 8s, Afghanistan secured 4 points with -0.305 and qualified into the semi-final as the runner-up of Group 1.

The below tabulated stats highlights the fact that Afghanistan (in group stages and Super 8s) won several low scoring contests with a dominating bowling performance when they batted first (except the semi-finals) and failed to secure victories in a competitive run chases:

Why Afghanistan lost the T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-Finals? Overall Facts

In contrast to their dominating bowling performance, a poor batting line-up resulted in Afghanistan surrendering themselves to the lowest total of 56-10 in 11.5 overs against South Africa in the first semi-final of T20 World Cup 2024.

Afghan skipper Rashid Khan’s decision to bat first completely backfired his plans as the South African bowling attack dominated throughout the innings. Apart from Azmatullah Omarzai (10 runs from 12 balls- 2 fours), the other batters managed to accumulate just a single-digit score.

South African bowlers Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi took 3 wickets each, whereas Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje grabbed 2 wickets to their name.

In response, South Africa easily chased the target by scoring 60-1 in 8.5 overs with the brilliant contribution of Reeza Hendricks (29 runs from 25 balls-including 3 fours and 1 six) and Aiden Markram (23 runs from 21 balls-including 4 fours). With 8 consecutive wins, South Africa extends its longest winning streak in T20 World Cup and also the 2nd biggest win in terms of wickets.

Although, South Africa won the semi-final match, Afghanistan won the hearts of every cricket fan, thereby motivating the young generation cricketers and other associate teams to exhibit impressive performances in the upcoming ICC tournaments.

Ultimately, the T20 World Cup 2024 is the beginning of Afghanistan Cricket Team’s journey to prove that the knockout stages isn’t a barrier for them and strives to lift their maiden trophy in the upcoming ICC tournaments.
