With Australia captain Tim Paine on international duty, the Hobart Hurricanes have Matthew Wade as captain, wicket-keeper and opening batsman and have been unchanged in their first three matches so far. Wade and D’Arcy Short have led the way with the bat at the top of the order and the Hurricanes could stick with the same line-up for a fourth consecutive match.

The leading batsman in last season’s Big Bash League, D’Arcy Short has picked up where he left off with scores of 67, 34 and 58 at the top of the order for the Hobart Hurricanes so far. Short also claimed two wickets the win against Melbourne Stars.

Opening partner (and captain and wicket-keeper) Matthew Wade has hit back-to-back half-centuries, meanwhile – scoring 52 against the Stars and 85 in the win against Sydney Thunder. The latter, from just 49 balls, included seven fours and four sixes, with he and Short sharing an opening stand of 120 at a run rate of ten an over.

With the ball, James Faulkner has five wickets so far, including 3-25 in the opening game at Brisbane. His lower-order batting has not yet been needed but he can hit a ball too. Fellow bowler Jofra Archer has six wickets with his raw pace, including 2-23 in the first match and 3-25 against Melbourne Stars. He took some punishment against Jos Buttler last time out but dismissed the England international in the final over.

Hobart Hurricanes have won all three matches so far. They kicked off at Brisbane Heat in a rain-reduced 19 overs match, and bowled the hosts out for 144 thanks to James Faulkner’s 3-25 as they chased a D’Arcy Short-inspired 159/6.

Next up, Hobart hosted Melbourne Stars and, after Jofra Archer’s 3-25 helped limit the Stars to 155/5, Matthew Wade hit 52 in a six-wicket win with eight balls to spare. Last time out, meanwhile, Jos Buttler’s big hitting had put the Hurricanes in a spot of bother but a 120-run opening stand from Wade (85 from 49 balls) and Short (58 from 39 balls), saw the Hurricanes reach their target of 194 to win by seven wickets with five balls to spare.

After two changes from the opening defeat, Perth Scorchers shuffled the pack again to face Adelaide Strikers and Josh Inglis did not let them down after replacing Sam Whiteman. Inglis took the gloves and opened the batting as the Scorchers won a low-scoring game to open their account for the new season. With Mitchell Marsh still on international duty, they may be unchanged for the first time this season.

Jason Behrendorff has led the way with the ball, taking two wickets in each of the three games so far, including 2-16 from four overs against Adelaide Strikers. Jhye Richardson’s 3-7 from three overs, which included a maiden and only four scoring shots, took the headlines, however.

Andrew Tye was back to his best too, meanwhile – he also bowled a maiden and took 2-9 from 2.2 overs.

With the bat, there has been little to shout about for the Scorchers so far, but David Willey headed to Australia having hit half-centuries in his previous two T20 Blast innings for Yorkshire in the English summer and Hilton Cartwright hit a 50 in the defeat to Sydney Sixers.

Perth Scorchers lost their first two matches, including being bowled out for just 103 in their first game against Melbourne Renegades. Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile claimed two wickets apiece in the reply but could not prevent a four-wicket defeat with 4.4 overs to spare.

Two more Behrendorff wickets followed against Sydney Sixers as the hosts posted 164/4 in Perth Scorchers’ second game and Hilton Cartwright’s 53 and Ashton Turner’s 49 were not enough as they finished short on 147/8.At the Optus Stadium, however, Perth hit back last time out, with Jhye Richardson (3-7), Andrew Tye (2-9) and Behrendorff (2-16) leading the way with the ball as they dismissed the Adelaide Strikers for 88 from 17.2 overs. In reply, Will Bosisto hit 36 not out and captain Ashton Turner a very patient 24 (from 46 balls) as the Scorchers strolled to a seven-wicket win.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Perth Scorchers Head to Head

Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers in last season’s semi-final after Matthew Wade hit 71 from 45 balls and Ben McDermott 67 from 30 balls in a total of 210/4. In reply, Dan Christian claimed 4-17 as the Scorchers were bowled out for 139 to bow out despite topping the points table.

The Scorchers had previously won their league game at the WACA, despite Simon Milenko’s 66 not out in the Hurricanes’ 167/5 – Cameron Bancroft’s half-century leading the reply in a five-wicket win.

In total, they have played each other nine times, with the Scorchers winning six and the Hurricanes three.
