Delhi Capitals (DC) unfortunate fate of losing all three editions of the Women’s Premier League finals allowed Mumbai Indians (MI) to win their second championship title.

Thanks to the captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 66-run knock supported by the all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 3-fer that helped MI secured a thrilling victory against DC by 8 runs in the WPL 2025 finals at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (March 15). 

Even the fierce knocks from Marizanne Kapp and Jemimah Rodrigues along with Niki Prasad’s strained efforts couldn’t help Delhi chase a 150-run target, which led to a heartbreaking hattrick of WPL finals loss.

Also, this is the second time MI has triumphed over DC at the same venue since the inaugural edition in 2023.

Despite Meg Lanning’s led Delhi finishing as the table toppers this season, they failed to break their finals curse due to six main errors that led MI to triumph in the championship clash. 6 Big Mistakes by Delhi Capitals that allowed Mumbai Indians to Clinch the WPL 2025 Trophy

Mumbai Indians took advantage of Delhi Capitals’s six big flaws to achieve their second championship title: 

1. DC Opted to Bowl First in a High-Pressure Final:

On a batting-friendly pitch at Brabourne Stadium, where the last three matches of this season were won by the teams that batted first, DC skipper Meg Lanning’s bold decision to bowl first after winning the toss backfired her strategy.

2. Allowed MI to Make a Comeback Despite their Second-Lowest WPL Powerplay Score

Delhi Capitals seemed to dominate in the initial stages after the quick fall wickets of the openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews, which led Mumbai to score their second-lowest powerplay score in WPL history (20/2 in 6 overs).

However, Harmanpreet Kaur played a captain’s knock scoring 66 runs out of 44 balls (including 9 fours and 2 sixes). She maintained an 89-run partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored a composed 28-ball-30 runs and smashed 4 fours.

In addition, the cameos of these three batters in the death overs guided MI to 149/7 in 20 overs:

3. Early Dismissal of DC’s Opening Batters

Chasing a modest target of 150, DC lost the opening batters Meg Lanning (13 runs) and Shafali Verma (4 runs) in the early stage.  Moreover, the Capitals’s run-chase wasn’t as successful as planned after they lost four wickets in quick succession within the first eight overs.

4. Losing the crucial wickets of Jemimah Rodrigues and Marizanne Kapp

Till the moment Jemimah Rodrigues (30 runs out of 21 balls—including 4 fours) and Marizanne Kapp (40 runs out of 26 balls— including 5 fours and 2 sixes) stayed on the crease, the Delhi supporters had hope of lifting the trophy.

After losing the wickets of these two batters, the match looked set for Mumbai Indians to attain another glory.

5. DC Batters Succumbed to MI’s Bowling Attack

With the field perfectly set up at the off-side and fine-leg too, Niki under pressure failed to find the possible gaps to strike a few boundaries. This resulted in only 5 runs being conceded in the 20th over.
